Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) update regarding Undergrounding Utilities
AMP held a public Town Hall meeting at the Alameda Library on Wednesday February 28, 2018 to update the public regarding its efforts to underground utilities in the City. These are the combined highlights from your Fernside HomeOwners Association board members Jim Strehlow and Bill Morrison.
Many utilities service Alameda over wires and cables suspended visibly in the air from utility poles to residences and businesses. The undergrounding of utilities (electrical, gas, cable) has been a goal of the City of Alameda since 1984. The project would remove the above ground utility poles and placing the wires and cables in conduit underground with utility boxes streetside. The project will include determining the best place for undergrounding to a residence or business based upon the unique character of each property. The project is paid from the 2% tax on all utility payers' monthly bills. AMP is the lead business coordinating electricity, AT&T phone, and AT&T/Comcast cable TV utility needs.
AMP has no plans in the next few years regarding the undergrounding of utilities in our homeowners' area. There is a Fernside area listed for undergrounding; but that is Fernside Blvd from Lincoln School to High Street. An oversight Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) met and set priority areas for the undergrounding of utilities as per the City Council's vote. The projects at Webster and then at Otis Drive will happen over five years spending much of the current $9.3 million in the fund. As more taxes are accumulated monthly, AMP will then work on other districts in the list.
